Magnesium is a silver-white metal located in Group 2 (alkaline earth metals) of the periodic table. It is the lightest structural metal and the eighth most abundant element in the Earth's crust. Magnesium has an atomic number of 12 and its atomic mass is around 24.31 grams per mole. At room temperature, magnesium exists as a hexagonal close-packed crystal structure and possesses good mechanical properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio and high fire resistance.
