The Rise of 5G Network Coverage

Over the past few years, 5G network coverage has expanded rapidly across many countries. While initial 5G deployments focused on major cities, coverage is now reaching more suburban and even some rural areas. According to a report from Analysys Mason, 5G network coverage in the US increased from 28% of the population at the end of 2020 to 50% by mid-2021. In South Korea, 5G coverage reached over 95% of the population by early 2022. China also saw impressive 5G deployment with its three major carriers working hard to rollout nationwide coverage in a short timeframe.

By the end of 2023, GSMA Intelligence predicts 5G Infrastructure coverage will reach over 60% of the global population. This represents tremendous growth from just a handful of commercial 5G networks that launched in 2019. The accelerated rollout of 5G infrastructure has been driven by both network operators and smartphone manufacturers.

On the network side, operators see 5G as the future of connectivity and are making big investments to deploy the necessary equipment and spectrum assets. Meanwhile, more affordable 5G smartphones have fueled consumer demand for ultra-fast mobile broadband access.
