What is an embedded SIM?

An embedded SIM or eSIM is a new type of SIM card that is embedded directly into devices like smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other IoT devices instead of using a physical nano-SIM or micro-SIM card. The embedded SIM specification was developed by the GSMA to support over-the-air SIM provisioning without needing to insert or swap a physical SIM card.

How embedded SIM Technology Works

An embedded eSIM uses embedded non-volatile memory to store the integrated circuit chip identifier (ICCID) and other subscriber details instead of using a removable SIM card. Devices with embedded SIM support have a built-in embedded SIM profile that allows remote downloading and activation of cellular subscriptions over-the-air through a centralized subscription management platform.

When a user purchases a new subscription, the mobile network operator provisions the embedded SIM profile with the necessary credentials and parameters for cellular connectivity. This embedded SIM profile can then be downloaded directly to the device via an OTA connection. The user no longer needs to visit a retail store to get a new physical SIM card activated for their device.

Advantages of embedded SIM Technology

Remote profile management is a major benefit of embedded SIM technology. Users gain the flexibility to easily activate new subscriptions or switch between carriers without having to swap physical SIM cards. For device manufacturers, embedded SIM eliminates the need to include physical SIM card slots in devices. This helps reduce device thickness and production costs.
