How Foiling Works

Wider front foils with trailing edges provide steering while narrower rear foils maximize lift. Adjustable foil pitch allows fine-tuning the planing angle for varying conditions or rider preference. Modern top-performing foils are usually made from carbon fiber for strength and low weight.

New Style of Riding

Stepping onto a foil board completely transforms the familiar windsurfing experience. Riders must learn to balance and control the board purely by shifting their body weight with no grip on the water. Turning and carving is achieved through subtle shifts and sail pressure rather than edged maneuvers. Speeds of over 30 knots are easily attainable by riders comfortable with the new dynamic. Mastering foiling takes dedication to developing a sense for the unique feel of an almost fully airborne glide. But for those who make the adjustment, foiling opens up an entirely new dimension that takes advantage of windpower like never before.

Expanding Possibilities

As riders continue expanding the limits of foiling ability, the potential uses for foil technology in windsurfing continue growing as well. Foil boards allow accessing entirely new riding locations previously impossible due to shallow water depths. Wakesurfing and wave riding behind powerboats or on smaller coastal breakers has become safer and more achievable. Boards are even being developed specifically for wave riding with attributes like deeper bottoms and adjustable foil rakes for better control shooting waves. Meanwhile, dedicated slalom and freestyle foil boards push the envelope with turns, spins and aerial maneuvers executed in ways never before imagined on water.
