Playing for free in World of Warcraft "makes sense" at some point, Blizzard says
A free-to-play edition of Blizzard Entertainment's chart-topping, enormously online multiplayer game World of Warcraft "makes sense" in the end as the chief designer Tom Chilton has said.
Speaking to Polygon, Chilton said Blizzard Tainment does not oppose the idea of changing the subscription-based game into an open-to-play model. However, the company is still having problems with a switch to business mode.
"For Blizzard, it makes sense to move to free-to-play at some time," Chilton said. "But much of the risk lies in making that change. There are stories of developers going free to play and gaining twice the amount of players however, you don't be aware of the reasons why it goes this way, and for how long this way. We don't really know what the average rate is prior to players stop and stop playing."
World of Warcraft is the largest subscription-based MMO game currently available. It was launched in 2004 and was home to 7.7 million users by June 30, 2004.
This month, Bethesda revealed that their forthcoming Fantasy MMO game The Elder Scrolls Online will be available for a subscription of $15 per month.
In the interview Chilton mentioned that the casual-themed Mists of cheap WoTLK Gold expansion for World of Warcraft , released in September 2012, was "very effective" for Blizzard entertainment. This is so much that the game could have been ruined in the event that the company hadn't introduced an expansion in the first place, Chilton said.
