When you purchase legendary crests, remember that you're not purchasing a roll of the dice like you purchase a FIFA Ultimate Team card pack, say. You are purchasing the chance to play with Diablo 4 Gold the dice, to get into the game engine and alter the drop rate (slightly) to your advantage. Gambling mechanics that are addictive are not isolated from the addictive gameplay mechanics, but rather tied directly to the combat system and loot drops within the game. Diablo is incredibly well-positioned to achieve this. As my colleague Maddy Myers pointed out, these games heavily focused on loot always had the feel of a slot machine and this is what Diablo Immortal's business strategy makes an actual.
Blizzard has been at pains to emphasize that Immortal's monetization is able to be ignored up to the point of the endgame that is the case, and claims that the vast majority gamers enjoy the game without having to spend anything, which is quite plausible. However, it's not true that the main enjoyment of Diablo is experiencing the story instead of trying to max out your character. It's also absurd to claim that these games have always been designed to create a hunger for hitting the power level of the players. People who have a tendency towards gambling addiction, to the addictive aspects of Diablo's Item gameor, more importantly even both -- the legendary crest system could be extremely harmful and can be very exploitative.
For those who don't, it simply makes Diablo less enjoyable.
We've been there before and we've been there before, or at least somewhere similar to it. When Diablo 3 launched in 2012 an auction house in real money that players could buy and sell their item drops. In theory, it was there to stop the fraud and cheating that plagued the trading of items with Diablo 2. However, to guide players toward that auctionhouse Blizzard reduced the drop rate of loot in the game to an level that the process of equipping your character with a weapon became a tedious chore and the game in general was boring to play. The auction house that was a snobbery was taken down and cheap Diablo 4 Gold drop rate were increased in 2014 Diablo 3 instantly became more entertaining, even before changes of the Reaper of Souls expansion elevated the game to a classic level.
